Getting to Casa Luna

Plan to have a car. Our location is remote and not well served by public transit.

✈️ By Air

The only nonstop flights between the U.S. and Italy arrive in Rome. From there, Casa Luna can be reached via several nearby airports:

  • Perugia (PEG) — approx. 1 hour by car (closest airport)

  • Florence / Firenze (FLR) — approx. 1.5 hours by car

  • Bologna (BLQ) or Pisa (PSA) — approx. 2 hours by car

🚗 By Car or Bus

  • Rome is approximately 3 hours away by car

  • Arezzo is about 20 minutes away by car or local bus

🚆 By Train

  • From Rome, high-speed trains reach Arezzo in about 1.5 hours

  • From Florence (Firenze):

    • High-speed train: ~30 minutes

    • Regional (slower) train: ~1.5 hours

  • From Arezzo, Casa Luna is a 20-minute drive or bus ride
    (Please note: local transit from Arezzo does not run after approximately 8:30 pm.)

🚉 Transit Once Arrived

The Arezzo train station is a convenient hub for regional and long-distance travel:

  • Frequent trains run to Florence (about 1 hour)

  • Trains to Rome take approximately 2–4 hours, depending on service

  • Several high-speed trains operate daily on both routes

This makes day trips and onward travel easy throughout your stay.

Transportation

Plan to have a car during your stay. Our home is remote and not well served by public transit.

Car Rental in Italy

Short-term rental options are available in town. However, for extended stays, we recommend a long-term rental through EuroCar and Sixt with pick-up at the Florence Airport (FLR).

  • Ideal for stays of 1–6 months
  • No Italian paperwork or resale concerns
  • Pickup and return at major airports
  • Insurance, maintenance, and roadside assistance are included, and Italian residency is not required.

Recommended Car Types for Tuscany

  • Small cars are best (Fiat Panda, Fiat 500, Toyota Yaris)
  • Easier on narrow village roads and tight parking
  • Manual transmission is more common and less expensive
  • Automatics are available but should be booked well in advance.

 

 

Wifi

High-speed Wi-Fi is available at the residency.

International Cell Service

Bringing an unlocked phone with a travel SIM or eSIM is helpful to stay connected. Good international/roaming SIM/eSIM options include:

  • Airalo eSIM — easy to install before travel, works on local networks.
  • Holafly — unlimited data plans in many countries.
  • Nomad eSIM — global coverage and flexible plans.
  • Saily, Jetpac, Yesim, and OneSimCard are more options worth comparing for data and coverage
  • If buying a local cell plan, be sure to bring all necessary documentation for SIM activation 

 

 

Anghiari sits in the Tuscan hills, so evenings are generally cooler than in cities like Florence or Rome. Our house is fully air-conditioned and heated for year-round comfort.

  • Spring (March–May):

    • Daytime: 55–72°F (13–22°C) — mild days

    • Evenings: cool, often in the 40s–50s°F

  • Summer (June–August):

    • Daytime: 78–90°F (26–32°C) — warm to hot days

    • Evenings: cooler, pleasant, and often breezy in the hills

  • Autumn (September–November):

    • Daytime: 60–75°F (16–24°C) — warm days

    • Evenings: cool, sometimes chilly

  • Winter (December–February):

    • Daytime: 40–55°F (4–13°C) — cool days

    • Evenings: cold nights

What to Wear

You’ll be most comfortable with practical, versatile clothing. Pack light, pack layers, and prioritize walking comfort. 

  • Comfortable, casual clothing
  • Neutral, simple styles (typical Italian countryside dress)
  • Clothes that layer easily from day to evening

Bring Layers (All Seasons)

  • Light jacket or cardigan
  • Sweater or fleece
  • Scarf 

Footwear

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Good grip for cobblestones and hills
  • Closed shoes for evenings
  • Optional: one nicer but still walkable pair
  • Avoid thin soles or brand-new shoes.

Summer Essentials

  • Breathable fabrics (cotton, linen)
  • Sun hat and sunglasses
  • Swimsuit
  • Light sweater for evenings
  • One slightly dressier outfit for dinners or events

Winter Essentials

  • Warm coat or insulated jacket
  • Sweaters / thermal layers
  • Waterproof outer layer
  • Closed shoes or boots

Extras 

  • Light rain jacket
  • European power adapter (Type C/F)
  • Water bottle
  • Daypack or crossbody bag
  • Slippers or indoor shoes
  • Small flashlight
  • Earplugs (church bells!)

 

Art Supplies to Consider

  • Supplies on hand are rudimentary and best for light use or experimentation.

  • Available materials include:

    • Oil paint

    • Oil pastels & soft pastels

    • Basic drawing supplies and paper

    • Brushes

    • Art table

    • Full oil-painting mixing setup

    • Three large easels

  • Canvases:

    • Some canvases are available

    • No canvas stretchers provided

  • Artists are asked to bring all specialized materials needed for their practice.

  • Please replenish or replace any shared supplies you use during your stay.

  • Purchasing supplies:

    • Limited art supplies may be found locally

    • We recommend ordering materials via Amazon in advance if you have specific needs

  • Studio space:

    • Large, expansive studio suitable for big projects

    • Indoor–outdoor workspace with excellent flexibility

    • Sink available in the studio and an adjacent bathroom

  • Dedicated studio space is available in the terrazzo.
  • There is no cost to participate in the residency.
  • A need-based stipend may be offered to help offset travel, materials, and living expenses.
  • Two-thirds of the stipend is provided at the start of the residency.
  • The remaining one-third is shared at the conclusion of the stay, provided the space is left clean and in good working order.

2. Artist Participation

  • Artists are encouraged to focus on their proposed project during their time at Casa Luna.
  • Artists are asked to leave a record of their work (e.g., photograph, sketch, video) and/or offer a public-facing moment such as an open studio, talk, workshop, class, or informal exhibition.
  • Work created during the residency may be shared through the Casa Luna online gallery.
  • Artists agree to respect shared spaces and follow residency guidelines for housing and studio use.

3. Artwork & Rights

  • Artists retain full ownership of all work created during the residency unless otherwise agreed in writing.
  • The Luna Foundation is offered the first opportunity to purchase one available work created during the residency, should the artist choose to sell (details to be mutually agreed).

4. Care & Responsibility

  • While every effort is made to create a safe and supportive environment, the Foundation cannot assume responsibility for personal injury, theft, or loss during the residency.

5. Continuity & Care

  • In rare cases involving serious misconduct or failure to honor residency agreements, the Foundation reserves the right to end the residency early.
